Petaluma, Sonoma County
Downtown Petaluma came through the 1906 earthquake with little damage, and its blocks of iron-front Victorian commercial buildings are among the most complete in California. Filmmakers have used them often, most famously for American Graffiti. East of town, a state historic park preserves the adobe ranch headquarters that General Mariano Vallejo built in 1836.
